Become a SANE
The NH SANE Program provides initial training, continuing education, and technical assistance to medical professionals who are practicing in NH and interested in providing specialized, trauma-informed care to victims of violence. The training is free (no fees or material purchases required) for anyone practicing in NH.
Requirements for the NH SANE training:
- Be a Registered Nurse (RN) or advanced practice provider
- Have a NH or COMPACT license in good standing
- Have at least one year of clinical nursing experience
- Plan to practice as a SANE in NH
SANE Training Options
A comprehensive Adult/Adolescent/Pediatric Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) training is offered three times each year. This 64-hour class covers the dynamics of sexual assault and child abuse, detailed history taking and documentation, injury and strangulation, medical management of STIs and pregnancy, evidence collection, the roles of the multidisciplinary team, and court testimony. After taking this class, new SANEs are able to practice with the adolescent and adult populations. Additional clinical training is required to practice with pediatric populations.
- Online Asynchronous: In the online format, the course consists of recorded modules, quizzes, and assignments that can be completed asynchronously over the course of 8-9 weeks. Nurses are expected to complete about 8 hours of content per week. The class culminates in a live experiential court testimony training. Nurses are also required to complete two additional live trainings—a review day and clinical skills lab—to be considered fully trained. This training is offered twice per year, in the winter and the fall.
- In person: In the live, in-person format of the training, nurses attend seven training days (usually two full days per week over 4-5 weeks) at the program’s office where they view live presentations and engage in assignments and group discussion. The class culminates in a live experiential court testimony training. Nurses are also required one additional live training—a clinical skills lab—to be considered fully trained. This training is offered once per year in the spring.
